The Goroka Show - Papua New Guinea

The Goroka Show is a well-known tribal gathering and cultural event in Papua New Guinea, attracting over 1000 tribesmen and women, representing over 70 different tribes from all over the country. This two-day sing-sing is a dazzling array of color and energy that showcases the diversity of this fabulous island. It is held every year during the weekend closest to the nation’s Independence Day celebrations in September, in the town of Goroka, the capital of the Eastern Highlands Province. About 100 tribes arrive to show their music, dance and culture.

The two day celebrations start in the morning. The mornings are meant for tourists who need to buy a VIP ticket to enter. After mid day general public are allowed and it gets very crowded. If you have a VIP pass you can enter the grounds early in the morning and take photographs as you wish. Accommodation may be tricky as the tourist hotels, Bird of Paradise and Pacific Gardens are always block booked two years ahead by the big tour operators. Budget accommodation may be available. Most hotels give you a free transport to the grounds and back. We were warned not to go out on our own especially during nights due to bag snatchers/mugging.

Papua New Guinea is a poorly developed country. There are cults in Papua New Guinea’s jungle interior who practice cannibalism. It is part of traditional culture and ritual in Papua New Guinea. It is rare in Cities and towns.
